01Base Design and Pin Spacing
The easiest way to distinguish G4 from G9 is to inspect the bottom of the bulb.
A G4 base has two thin, straight pins with a nominal center-to-center spacing of 4 mm. A G9 base uses two loop-shaped contacts with a nominal spacing of 9 mm. These different connections require matching lamp holders.
The numbers do not describe the bulb’s overall width or wattage. Two bulbs with the same base can have different body dimensions, light outputs, and power ratings.
Before ordering, check the base code printed on the existing bulb or fixture. Appearance is useful for identification, but the product label provides a more reliable starting point.
02Voltage and Power Supply Requirements
Voltage is a critical part of selecting a compatible replacement.
G4 LED bulbs
Many G4 LED bulbs are designed for 12V operation. However, their input requirements differ: some accept AC and DC, while others require a particular supply type. A “12V” label alone does not confirm compatibility with every transformer.
When replacing halogen G4 bulbs, check:
- The transformer’s output voltage and supply type.
- Whether the LED manufacturer supports that transformer.
- The transformer’s permitted load range.
- Compatibility with any dimmer in the circuit.
G9 LED bulbs
G9 LED bulbs are commonly designed for mains operation, but the voltage depends on the model and destination market. For example, manufacturers offer both 120V and 220–240V G9 products. These voltage versions must not be treated as interchangeable.
Match the bulb to the fixture’s specified supply, rather than assuming that every G9 bulb uses the same voltage.
03Bulb Size and Fixture Clearance
A matching base does not guarantee that an LED replacement will fit.
LED capsules contain electronic components, and their bodies may differ from the original halogen bulb. Even within one base type, dimensions vary: a Philips G4 model measures 40 mm long and 15 mm wide, while a Feit G9 model measures approximately 48 mm long and 15 mm wide. These are individual examples, not standard sizes for all G4 or G9 bulbs.
Check the replacement’s overall length, maximum width, and clearance inside the shade. For fixtures with covers, also confirm whether the specific LED bulb is approved for enclosed use.
For bulk purchasing, request a dimension drawing and test samples in the actual fixture before confirming an order.
04Brightness and Light Appearance
G9 does not automatically mean brighter, and G4 does not automatically mean more efficient. Brightness depends on the individual bulb’s lumen output.
Compare these specifications separately:
- Lumens The amount of light produced.
- Watts Electrical power consumption.
- Color temperature How warm or cool the light appears.
- CRI How accurately colors appear under the light.
For example, published specifications include a 200-lumen G4 model and a 225-lumen G9 model. The base code alone tells you neither value.
For a chandelier or a room with multiple fixtures, order matching color temperatures and evaluate samples together to check visual consistency.
05Dimming Compatibility
Neither G4 nor G9 LED bulbs are automatically dimmable.
A suitable installation needs a bulb specifically marked as dimmable and a compatible control system. With G4, the transformer must also support the intended combination. Manufacturers may restrict a dimmable bulb to particular dimmers or publish compatibility lists.
For hotel rooms, restaurants, and other projects that depend on dimming, test the complete setup before ordering in volume. Check startup, adjustment across the dimming range, and behavior at the lowest setting.
How to Choose the Right Replacement
Start with the existing fixture, then confirm the bulb’s specifications in this order:
- Base: identify G4 or G9.
- Voltage: match the rated supply and AC/DC requirements.
- Fit: check the dimension drawing and available clearance.
- Light output: select lumens, color temperature, and CRI.
- Controls: verify transformer and dimmer compatibility.
- Operating conditions: confirm suitability for the enclosure and application.
For distributors and importers, keep voltage versions clearly separated in product listings, packaging, and stock records.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace a G4 bulb with a G9 bulb?
No. Their contact designs and spacing differ, and their operating voltages often differ as well. Choose a replacement with the same specified base and electrical rating.
Are all G4 LED bulbs 12V?
12V is common, but always check the individual product’s rated input and AC/DC requirements. The G4 designation identifies the base.
Are all G9 LED bulbs 230V?
No. G9 LED bulbs are also available in 120V versions. Check both the fixture label and the bulb specification.
Can I replace halogen capsules with LEDs?
Often, provided the replacement matches the base, voltage, dimensions, operating conditions, and control system. A matching socket is only one part of compatibility.
